NJ bill would allow for voluntary donations to state for veteran suicide PSAs

TRENTON, N.J. (PIX11) – It’s a bipartisan effort inside the state house to save more Veterans’ lives and give more people the power to help.
If passed and signed into law, a bill would allow the newly formed State Department of Veterans Affairs to accept gifts and donations for the purpose of creating public service announcements campaigning against veteran suicide.
Authoring the bipartisan effort are Democratic Senators James Beach and Raj Mukherji and Republican Assemblywoman Aura Dunn.
“It’s about making sure that we do all that we can to raise awareness and prevent this and the reality is the resources aren’t there,” said Dunn (R-NJ 25th District). “We need support, and the public has expressed a desire to make personal donations towards this, so this really facilitates that.”
“We lose 22 Veterans each day,” said Michael Boll of the NJ Veterans Network. “This is a very serious topic and an epidemic that’s going on.”
Boll, a Marine veteran, hopes organizations like the American Legion and VFW are able to have some say in what goes in the announcements. “If they’re going to make PSAs for veteran suicide, we’re all about it. We just want to know that the other groups, boots on the ground grassroots organizations have some input with that because we know how to prevent suicides pretty much better than most other groups and we’re willing to help.”
“Just making sure that people know that there’s help and that people care is very important,” said Doc Schupp, an Army veteran. “I think that any veteran who right now is maybe feeling like the walls are closing in on them might feel like there’s a little light coming your way.”
The bill is set to be discussed in committee on Thursday.
