More legislation has been introduced in the New Jersey General Assembly that looks to provide more state aid to school districts in the Highlands Region. The Jefferson School district, which falls in the Highlands Region, faces a projected $4.8 million shortfall for the 2026–27 school year.

This is the third bill that has been introduced by Assemblywoman Aura Dunn (25) that aims to help Highlands Region schools.

The latest bill, Bill A4770, “Increases amounts of aid paid to certain municipalities that host watershed lands; increases amount annually appropriated to "Highlands Protection Fund" from realty transfer fee revenues.”

“Highlands communities protect our clean drinking water for the entire state,” Dunn (R-Morris) said in a press release on March 17. “The state must finally keep its promise to these towns and schools.”

“We can both protect our natural resources and the education of our Highlands students through thoughtful legislation such as the bills I’ve proposed,” Dunn said.
