Assemblywoman Aura Dunn Raises Concerns Over NJ Graduation Rates and Student Readiness
by tapinto.net
New Jersey’s high school graduation rate looks impressive — over 90%. But a new report makes clear that number is giving families false hope.
Nearly 40% of students who walk across the stage to get their diploma can’t do basic high school math. Graduation requirements have been weakened over the years and the gaps show up the moment students arrive on college campuses.
Many end up in remedial classes, delaying their progress and adding cost and frustration.
That’s exactly why I introduced A4991. It requires our public colleges and universities to report how many newly admitted students are placed into remedial courses and to break that data down by the school district that graduated them.
The Secretary of Higher Education would then produce an annual report so parents, educators, and policymakers can see the real picture.
We invest billions in K-12 education. We should know whether students are actually ready for the next step.
Transparency isn’t optional. It’s the first step toward fixing the problem.
Let me know your thoughts on this important step.
